Commons:Bots/Requests/MinerBot
Automatic or Manually Assisted: Manually assisted
Programming Language(s): Python using pywikipedia
Edit period(s) (e.g. Continuous, daily, one time run): Manual start
Bot flag requested: (Y/N): Y
Functions: Need to clean up categories (like Category:Forests of Poland, Category:Forests in Poland), possibly using Commons:CategoryRedirectBot code, but running on a limited scope. I usually code my own scripts to do the particular task and the actual bot code is always available in the public mercurial repository.
Code example: On the plwiki I run a daily bot scanning all the chemical infoboxes daily and creating a custom index (see [1] for my code for that).
Discussion
- I think will be good idea to include Bot into user name. Please also describe tasks which you potentially want to do at Commons except category redirects. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 16:47, 3 January 2009 (UTC)
- Ok, the name is just SUL for my other bots. Is MinerBot ok? The only other application I can think of right now is to mass-repair image descriptions, especially those uploaded by commonist. « Saper // @talk » 01:06, 4 January 2009 (UTC)
- MinerBot looks fine for me, however DeminerBot is closer to original meaning :-)
- Could you please make a test run for repairing image descriptions?

- Dear Saper, I'm afraid you have not done a test run yet, I wonder if you will be doing it in the near future? Patrícia msg 17:53, 12 January 2009 (UTC)
- I also believe a test run would be needed, but for the user himself I see no problems with garanting the flags due I concidder him (also from non-commons-experience) totally trustable. abf «Cabale?! Quelle Caballe?» 19:07, 17 January 2009 (UTC)
- Great, then all we need is test edits :). Patrícia msg 12:28, 18 January 2009 (UTC)
- I wonder if Saper still wants to run a bot over here. Multichill (talk) 23:50, 6 February 2009 (UTC)
Sorry, I decided not to update any descriptions, for that simple reason that I wasn't able to come up with any example of doing this. However, I still would like to move some categories, as indicated in the original request. Please see the test run for my bot. By the way, thanks for moving Category:Forests in Poland. « Saper // @talk » 04:32, 8 February 2009 (UTC)- Well, reverting that change. Technically it ran fine, but I shouldn't be changing that category name - the forest spans the Polish and Belarussian borders and this is a UNESCO-standardized name, good or bad. The second run of the bot reverses the change. « Saper // @talk » 08:24, 8 February 2009 (UTC)
- The is also a sample run to fix typos I made when uploading some images via Commonist. Please see the Special:Contributions/MinerBot entries and the code itself. « Saper // @talk » 00:41, 9 February 2009 (UTC)
- Bot contributions look fine for me. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:37, 10 February 2009 (UTC)
