  • Source to upload from:TBD, a domain of the University of Amsterdam, to be organised internally

by the Department Special Collections of the University of Amsterdam

    • Do the media URLs follow a pattern? Source image filenames are for example UBA01_IZ1207714_001 (UBA = Universiteitsbibliotheek Amsterdam. IZ = Iconographia Zoologica)
    • Does the site have an API?
    • What else could ease uploading? (is the site valid XHTML, do they use a WCM…?)
    • Did you contact the site owner?
  • Describe the works to be uploaded in detail (audio files, images by …):

a large digitised collection of old, out of copyright, artwork mainly of animals. Original images by occasionally famous artists are cutouts etc. from eighteenth and nineteenth century illustrated biology books. Image data format: .tif(f), say 30+ MB each. The metadata is available in two Excel spreadsheets:

  • 30064 records for vertebrates and
  • 28595 records for invertebrates.

These numbers still include empty rows and rows with extra data, so that the real number of images to be uploaded will be less.

Test upload: Seven images of bird art have been uploaded to Category:Iconographia Zoologica with filenames starting with "Special Collections University of Amsterdam - Iconographia Zoologica "

  • Which license tag(s) should be applied?

PD-old-100-1923

  • Is there a template that could be used on the file description pages? Do you think a special template should be created?

Institutional templates:

  • Institution:Special Collections of the University of Amsterdam
  • UvA-BC (refer to test uploads)

Metadata template used in test upload: Biohist (Template:Biohist) (This template was written for the project of Naturalis Biodiversity Center, which shares the notion of biological species metadata with the present job, refer to Commons:Naturalis_Biodiversity_Center)

Test of correspondence of metadata biological taxonomy with categories already in place on Commons: User:Hansmuller/Sandbox#Iconographia_Zoologica.2C_test_categories_exist.3F

This shows that the modern taxonomy (correct species names) of the vertebrate images has been sorted out reasonably well, while that of the invertebrates still needs much work. The modern taxonomy is essential for retrieval and categorisation of the images on Wikimedia Commons.
