Category talk:Ypres
We have a policy that category names are those of the spelling of article on en.wp. It appears that the Flemmish nl:Ieper is called en:Ypres, just as we have category:The Hague and Den Haag, we can have Category:Ypres and Ieper. As far as I can tell this would be according to policy... Siebrand 21:25, 29 May 2007 (UTC)
Category:Den Haag looks much more interesting to me than Category:The Hague How will this situation evolve ? And the mix of Den haag and The Hague in the various sub-category names ? --Foroa 22:19, 29 May 2007 (UTC)

Oppose. I have created this category according to the current language policy in Commons for categories. The English name for this place is an established exonym, so the official name does not matter. On the other hand, the gallery Ieper is correctly named. --Juiced lemon 22:03, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

My opinion is that pages relating to the historical entity Ypres e.g. pages dealing with the Flanders battles of World War I, should continue to use the word Ypres. In the historical culture of the English language the name is Ypres. Certainly photographs and maps of "Ypres" and surroundings up to 1919 bear no relationship to the modern Ieper as everything was rebuilt.
Pages relating to the modern Ieper, e.g. the modern light industrial zone, should use Ieper. To use the new name in referring to old events and the old town is to distort history. Rcbutcher 06:09, 28 September 2007 (UTC)
