Commons naming convention - plural form
Please merge --Foroa 09:47, 28 September 2007 (UTC)
- It was my understanding (I may be mistaken) that this category was for media related to the activities that create sculptures (in Dutch beeldhouwen). en:Sculpture has an interwiki link to nl:Beeldhouwkunst. Anyone? Siebrand 11:04, 30 September 2007 (UTC)
Categories should be always in plural (artikels singular). Category:sculptors contain the human part of it, Category:sculptures the techniques, materials and the final result from sculpturing. The English doesn't seem to follow this plural convention. Anyway, someone else seems to have moved the cat since I placed the request, so this request can be deleted by now. --Foroa 13:52, 1 October 2007 (UTC)
- This request was a nonsense, since Category:Sculpture and Category:Sculptures are categories about two different subjects:
- first subject: The art or practice of shaping figures or designs in the round or in relief, as by chiseling marble, modeling clay, or casting in metal.. When used with this meaning, “sculpture” remains into the singular, like “architecture”
- second subject: A work of art created by sculpture.
- The content of Category:Sculpture has been wrongly moved and this action have to be cancelled. --Juiced lemon 21:02, 6 October 2007 (UTC)
- Before calling it nonsense in the usual friendly JL way, it might be a good idea to indicate:
- where the rules about sculpture/sculptures/sculptors are explained: I did find none
- where it is indicated when and under what conditions one can deviate from the categories plural form
- Before calling it nonsense in the usual friendly JL way, it might be a good idea to indicate:
Anyway, the sculpture and sculptures cat contained plenty of overlapping cats, so at least this has been cleared out by the move. --Foroa 07:38, 7 October 2007 (UTC)
- The nonsense is to mix up an immaterial concept and a object type, like “cuisine” and “food”. I assess the result, but not the development which has leaded to that: to analyze this development is not my concern at the moment.
- There are no specific rules about “sculpture/sculptures/sculptors”, but the first phrase in Commons:Categories states one category=one subject. When an English word has different meanings, and several meanings are accepted subjects in Commons, we use a disambiguation method in order to differentiate the subjects. These subjects may be naturally differentiated in other languages than English, but categories are in English.
- Category:Sculpture/Category:Sculptures is the implementation of a disambiguation method. This is not an isolated case (example: Category:Song/Category:Songs).
- Do you question this method? --Juiced lemon 10:00, 7 October 2007 (UTC)
- I am questioning no single method, provided there is an acceptable method. In the former sculpture/sculptures, I could not identify any method or logic, so I concluded (and many other users too) that the mix was due to the traditional singular/plural confusion. Now you are quickly describing a method and a logic, and within a month or two, the situation will be again as it was last month. So, as far as I'm concerned, if the method is not documented in the proper root categories (documentation can be limited to one or two sentenses), I am forced to try to guess the method, and mix and merge cats as I feel necessary. Overall, if there is no documented logic, then there is no particular logic, so everybody will do to apply the most sensible and simple logic, which is most certainly not the more elaborated one you described.
- A documentation of the implementation of a disambiguation method seems an absolute necessity: how can one guess what is what when encountering one of the “sculpture/sculptures/sculptors” words ? --Foroa 12:19, 7 October 2007 (UTC)
- Concerning Category:Song/Category:Songs, you will avoid a lot of modifications if you document it and bring it in relation to Category:Vocalists, Category:Singing, Category:Vocal music and Category:Voice.
Rename
[edit]I proposed to rename the category (see category page). Any comments? -- H005 15:07, 8 January 2010 (UTC)
- Support Sculpturing, sculptures and sculptors should create less confusion and would be a little closer to painting, paintings and painters (and drawing and drawings). Sculpture would then to be redirected to sculptures. --Foroa (talk) 15:40, 8 January 2010 (UTC)
