Datagraphics

[edit]

I suggest "datagraphics" instead of "diagrams". SVG datagraphics created with spreadsheet. See:

It is a word like infographics that is being used more and more as one word. --Timeshifter (talk) 22:20, 14 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Timeshifter: In 2021 I modeled the name of this category after the family of categories that begin Category:SVG diagrams created with. I don't see a corresponding category or category family for "Datagraphics" or "Data graphics. I'm not appreciating a motivation to change the name of a category having >200 members. @RCraig09: Please see the infobox at the top right of the main category:
Category:Diagrams - According to that info box there are no diagrams in your category.
Also the discussion linked from the top of that category:
Commons:Categories for discussion/2021/01/Category:Diagrams
You could accurately title the category as
Category:SVG charts created with spreadsheet. Does not include statistical maps.
Category:SVG datagraphics created with spreadsheet - this would also include statistical maps. Someday you, or others, may create data maps with spreadsheets. There could be subcategories of SVG datagraphics:
Category:SVG maps created with spreadsheet.
Category:SVG charts created with spreadsheet.

— Yes, there is disagreement and ambiguity as to definitions. I don't see a clear implication of your 2021 discussion on the name of the present category.
— ?? Category:Diagrams, not limited to SVGs, does not mean "there are no diagrams in your category". There are presently 238 files in this category, all specifically SVGs.
— Not all files created with spreadsheets (including the spreadsheets I designed) are strictly charts; spreadsheets can be used just to generate code for a frame and inner area and labels, and the worker can add his own elements.
— I strongly oppose the dispersal of these SVG files across multiple categories based on pedantic hair-splitting distinctions. That dispersal would require some individual files to be categorized in multiple categories, and it would make finding the outputs of spreadsheets extremely hard to find. Categories should make things easy for humans to find.
— At the very most, for whatever motivation you have, you could consider changing entries in Category:svg SVG diagrams created with to "Category:SVG files created with ____". "Files" is the generic term. But even that change would consume more person-hours than it's worth. RCraig09 (talk) 21:46, 15 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

"files" would work. Can I start? I have Cat-a-lot and HotCat gadgets turned on in my preferences. --Timeshifter (talk) 05:59, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Timeshifter: I strongly suggest you start a concise discussion at Category talk:SVG diagrams created with so that other editors who have categorized thousands of files can bring up any issues. And there's the related issue of the existence of a Category:Diagrams created with (not limited to SVG files); that category's Talk Page should also be informed/consulted. Even then, probably most editors don't monitor Category pages, but they will notice when their (thousands of) files are re-categorized. As a practical matter, I don't know if your gadgets can perform huge batch operations correctly. RCraig09 (talk) 06:26, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@RCraig09: The gadgets work great. Very few editors will care about the category name change. I have over 29,000 edits on the Commons. This kind of stuff is easy to do.
I see a better solution already in place:
Category:SVG graphics by software used
And this category does not exist:
Category:SVG files by software used
So I moved the files to here:
Category:SVG graphics created with spreadsheet
It was easy and quick. If it is a problem I can move them back to the old category name.

It now redirects to:
Category:SVG graphics by software used
