Proposed mover to Category:Station buffers in the United Kingdom
[edit]- Oppose My understanding is that buffers are on rail vehicles and the correct term (in the UK) for fixed devices at the end of a line is either 'buffer stop' or 'stop block'. English Wikipedia also uses this distinction and so it seems appropriate that we use it for the Commons categories. Geof Sheppard (talk) 13:38, 7 January 2020 (UTC)
- @Geof Sheppard: In which case I suggest renaming the other categories in this hierarchy to match this one. I don't know how to make such a proposal and don't have time right now to learn how so please feel free to do it yourself. If you do do that please consider this proposal withdrawn. I agree, but am in much the same position as you. I'll put it on my 'to do' list for some other time. Geof Sheppard (talk) 17:06, 9 January 2020 (UTC)
- Comment @Thryduulf: Why to not distinguish railway station buffers from "tram station" buffers or funicular buffers? Why to distinguish track buffers outside stations from station buffers? --ŠJů (talk) 10:53, 8 February 2020 (UTC)
- @Geof Sheppard: Isn't is so that buffers can be and can be not parts of the stop block on the track? --ŠJů (talk) 10:53, 8 February 2020 (UTC)
- @ŠJů: in which case the best name for the categories might be "Station buffer stops in x". AIUI Geof Sheppard's concern is to distinguish "buffers" (affixed to rolling stock) and "buffer stops" (affixed to the track). These would be a sub-category of "Category:Buffer stops in x" also containing those located in sidings, etc. The whole category tree of Category:Buffers is muddled with tram buffers having a separate hierarchy with sub-categories for tram buffers in Edinburgh and Prague and on Tramlink (London) being direct sub-cats of Category:Tram track buffers. - I've made a suggestion at Category talk:Buffers to try and sort the mess out at a higher level than this. I will withdraw this move request. Thryduulf (talk) 16:41, 8 February 2020 (UTC)
- @Thryduulf: Thank You for the discussion start. It is difficult to reorganize all together to be utterly perfect, but some good steps or ideas can be found in the discussion. --ŠJů (talk) 21:48, 9 February 2020 (UTC)
