Intended scope

[edit]

@Chris Light: is this category supposed to be (judging by parent categories) only for the original location in Pike Place Market? Because for over 15 years they have had a second location in Pacific Place, and I believe that for a while they had a location at SeaTac Airport. - Jmabel ! talk 23:04, 25 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure what you're saying. Okay, there are two locations for this business. So, is the question if this is supposed to be only the location in the Market, which the images all appear to be is the name to general and should be parent -> Pike Place Chowder with potential subs of 1) Pike Place Chowder (PPM) and 2) Pike Place Chowder (PP)? My thought was that the standard in commons seems to be that the first posting of a name often takes the undifferentiated title and the others, the others that follow gets a moniker added. The examples I can think of are to huge, all titles have been standardized, i.e. Category:Union Station, Category:Portland, or Category:Green River. So, I didn't think further.
  1. The intended scope was to create or locate entries for Category:Restaurants in Pike Place Market, so there would be a single location for images of eating places. I'm also looking as the same for Category:Shops in Pike Place Market.
  2. While in the above process, I thought it would be good to link each shop or restaurant with its building location, since those {:Category:Buildings in Pike Place Market]] have been created previously. Thus, if a user is looking for building, they will find the general images of the building and the associated vendors within each.
  3. Which lead to not all locations in the market are buildings and yet have multiple images, creating a massive number of general listings in the Category:Pike Place Market. I've created some new places, i.e., Category:Skybridge, Pike Place Market, but left them still in the main market category.
  4. Which leads me to your next item. Since I have to go, I'll reply later to that question.
Suggestions: Rename the Chowder House? eliminate it? Advise of locating vendors in the market, who may or may not already be created categories? I've spent many hours going through images, trying to reduce the number of generally categorized images in the Category:Pike Place Market so pictures would be easier to locate.
Questions: How many categories are too many for an image? Can an image be in two categories, where one is a sub of the other?
I'll get to the Market Sign and Hotel categories when I'm back. Chris Light (talk) 16:16, 26 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Can't answer all of that right now, but we generally try to avoid putting an image (or category) in two categories, where one is a sub of the other. That's what COM:OVERCAT is about. Sometimes there are exceptions, but usually not where the relation between those categories is an "is-a" or "is-part-of" relationship. For an example of an exception, a building might be in a category for a street it is on, and an image of the street in which several buildings appear might use both the cat for the street and for each of the individual buildings. Another example of an exception: a building designed by a particular person would probably be a direct of indirect subcat of that person; if we had a picture of the person in front of the building, we'd probably use both categories. - Jmabel ! talk 17:45, 26 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Also, given the distinction you've already made of Category:Upper Post Alley in Pike Place Market, if you mean just the Market location, shouldn't that be the parent here, not Category:Post Alley in Pike Place Market? - Jmabel ! talk 23:06, 25 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
