Why are these icons released under a license that requires attribution?
[edit]It was a great idea to release a set of icons that could be of standardized use in all Wikimedia projects. It is a shame, however, that they have been released under a license that requires attribution, as this means that, as an interface administrator, I cannot use them without providing a link to the relevant commons page. A link that is, as required by law, to be visible and clickable every single time the component is used, which, at UI-component level, can become very cumbersome and may lead to user mistakes: for example, I cannot use the email icon to create a clickable button that allows a Wikipedia user to email another user because that clicking area must be reserved to comply with the license.
I do not know at which point it was decided to release them under a BY license: this renders them unusable as elements at UI level. @MGalloway (WMF), I would like to request that you re-release the icons under a PD license so that we can actually use them in Wikimedia Projects. Also tagging @User:BGerdemann (WMF) so that more relevant people are aware of this problem. Nacaru (talk) 15:43, 21 September 2024 (UTC)
