Moult versus moulting (molt versus molting)
[edit]Although I am not a native English speaker I am convinced that the word "moult" (or "molt") represents the action of shedding all or part of feathers, hair, skin etc. The Category:Moult and Category:Molting should not exist in parallel (or as sub-categories) with supposed different meaning because the words are practically synonyms. Please see for example http://www.onelook.com/?w=moult. Also Category:Molting certainly should not be sub-category of Category:Insects because moulting is not related only to insects. --Pabouk (talk) 10:47, 12 September 2008 (UTC)
I am not a native speaker neither. A couple of comments.
- Molt is actually a bad name for the category; in commons, categories should be in the plural noun form, in this case molts/moults or molters/moulters (The material cast off during molting); I don't know what the preferred name should be. I think that you will agree that the noun molts is quite different from the transitive verb molting.
- Normally I would have merged molting into moult, but it was a shame to burry the several videos and animated gif into the mass of molt pictures, so I removed the merge request. For me, this is a sample case as I think that type of situations will occur more and more in the future, so we have to think on how we structure and name that.
- I agree that molts (will) need to have subcategories for insects, reptiles, birds, mammals ... which are then properly connected to the relevant categories --Foroa (talk) 12:27, 12 September 2008 (UTC)
- Simple solution:
- Merge categories "Molt" and "Molting"
- Split off one category for videos/animations
- Sort rest of content taxonomically (ecdysis of argthropods and molt of birds and molt of mammals are very different things).
