Name change to "Military culture"

Proposing this change, because not only will that bring it in line with other category structures which use "culture", it will also be a bit broader and thus a better generic topcat just below "Military". Ingolfson (talk) 07:07, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

Oppose, I understand your argument that culture is used in Commons for categories with a similar remit.I had a similar debate to this at Wikisource, were the proposal was to remove the category "Romantic poetry" and replace it with "early post modern poetry", in order to better fit within the Wikisource categorisation scheme, my argument than and my argument here is that the wiki projects should not adopt a categorisation scheme outside of the normal accepted usage of everyday use.

The terms "Military Life" and "Military Culture" have a parlance and established usage which would be at odds with your intended use here. "Military Culture" is not just the day to day life in the military, or even the ritualised external trappings of military ceremony. It is the moral and intellectual code of militaries and military people, the Bushido code of Japan, the Chivalric code of the European knight, the honour code that binds the graduates of service academies world wide, it is the Rifleman's creed of the USMC, the songs and recited histories of the French foreign legion, and to use a term that has caught on in the mass media the "warrior ethos". Creating the cat and using it as you intend would probably be in line with Commons useage but not with established present and historical useage.KTo288 (talk) 09:19, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
