Category talk:Lanchester by Vanden Plas
@Buch-t: Somehow this was a duplicate. Eddaido (talk) 12:24, 30 December 2019 (UTC)
- I don't understand. Where is a duplicate? I had created this category for cars make Lanchester with body by Vanden Plas.
- In Category:Vanden Plas Coachwork there are some categories for make (Alvis, Bentley, Cadillac, Daimler) with body by Vanden Plas. Why not the same for Lanchester? --Buch-t (talk) 07:18, 1 January 2020 (UTC)
- Oops I recognise it looks like I may have made a bad mistake here. Please let me think about it for an hour. Will be back. Sorry for this. Eddaido (talk) 07:28, 1 January 2020 (UTC)
- Sorry Buch-t please tell me if I have only tried to fix it and gone wrong. Thanks, Eddaido (talk) 08:15, 1 January 2020 (UTC)
- Category:Lanchester automobiles is missing. --Buch-t (talk) 08:20, 1 January 2020 (UTC)
- That would be an overcat. because they are here: Category:Lanchester Thirty-Two Eddaido (talk) 08:24, 1 January 2020 (UTC)
- I think that there must be a chance to find the Category:Lanchester by Vanden Plas somewhere at Category:Lanchester Motor Company, Category:Lanchester vehicles or Category:Lanchester automobiles. --Buch-t (talk) 08:33, 1 January 2020 (UTC)
- I don't think so. Does this happen with other brands of car? Eddaido (talk) 08:45, 1 January 2020 (UTC)
- I did at Category:Alvis by Vanden Plas, Category:Bentley by Vanden Plas, Category:Cadillac by Vanden Plas. You did not. What is right? --Buch-t (talk) 08:56, 1 January 2020 (UTC)
Yes, I see you have done some others too. It seems no one else has. Why don't you ask at Categories for discussion and / or Michael Barera or Morio who have been around much longer than I have and have different interests and might have some opinions. If you did this properly for the famous pre WWII marques you'd be at it for ever wouldn't you? I think there are special categories (it has never been explained to me because I'm not clever enough) which somehow avoid over-categorisation - I think over-categorisation is what you are achieving with Category:Bentley by Vanden Plas, Category:Cadillac by Vanden Plas etc. Ask around. regards and Happy New Year. Eddaido (talk) 09:24, 1 January 2020 (UTC)
- @Michael Barera, Morio, and Mr.choppers: Your opinions?
- I found Category:Delahaye automobiles with Franay, Antem, Pourtout, Chapron.
- My English is not good enough for Commons:Categories for discussion. --Buch-t (talk) 09:44, 1 January 2020 (UTC)
- Me also and I've only spoken only English alll my only life. I have been trying to categorise some Delahayes and been defeated by the Absurd sub-categorising and I feel Very strongly about this too. I'm interested to see our friends' responses. Cheers, Eddaido (talk) 10:46, 1 January 2020 (UTC)
- If everyone thinks yours is a good idea then I think (frinstance) there should be a Category:Delahaye bodies which would appear in the first section of the page Category:Delahaye automobiles immediately below Category:Delahaye automobiles by model year and those cats like Delahaye by Franay etc should feed into Category:Delahaye bodies and not be on there own the way they are now. Eddaido (talk) 10:54, 1 January 2020 (UTC)
- Starting from the bottom: Lanchester by Vanden Plas should be in Category:Vanden Plas Coachwork as well as Category:Lanchester automobiles. This is in no way an overcategorization. I do not see what would be gained by adding a "Delahaye bodies" intermediate category. Show me the Dealahaye problem, more eyes are always better I think. mr.choppers (talk)-en- 14:56, 1 January 2020 (UTC)
- I'd certainly be in favor of a discussion at Categories for Discussion on this matter. Perhaps my understanding of Commons' overcategorization principal is flawed or dated, and perhaps there are problems with my ideas. I would be happy to abide by the resulting consensus from the discussion.
- To be clear where I stand, my preference is for separate subcategories for vehicles in museums, which tend to be individual objects that are repeatedly photographed, for example Category:Volkswagen Type 4 in the ZeitHaus. I believe it is more efficient to put all photos of that specific car in that one subcategory instead of having each of those images separately in Category:Volkswagen Type 4, Category:1970s automobiles in the ZeitHaus, Category:Orange station wagons, Category:1970 Volkswagen automobiles, Category:Volkswagen Type 4 Variant, and Category:Volkswagen automobiles in the ZeitHaus. One of the biggest strengths of this approach is that when new photos of that particular car are taken and uploaded to Commons (which is highly likely considering that it is on public display in a museum), then it can be added to that one subcategory instead of all six of the higher-level categories.
- To reiterate, if the result of the discussion goes against my understanding and interpretation of Commons policy, then I will certainly be happy to change my editing practices. Michael Barera (talk) 16:14, 1 January 2020 (UTC)
- That is not what is being discussed here. Eddaido believes that Category:Lanchester by Vanden Plas should not be in Category:Vanden Plas Coachwork as well as Category:Lanchester automobiles, when that is exactly what iit is designed to do. I am not sure where the museum thing can be discussed but would welcome an invitation. Best, mr.choppers (talk)-en- 00:48, 2 January 2020 (UTC)

- Hi Buch-t, I'm sure Mr C is wrong, no-one else supports him. Cheers, Eddaido (talk) 12:44, 4 January 2020 (UTC)
- How do you reckon? Buch-t created the category and I support the way it was made, exactly as for all other categories similarly situated. mr.choppers (talk)-en- 14:08, 6 January 2020 (UTC)
