Category talk:Gas stations in the United States
Although the term "Gas station" is more widely used in US, I think the category should be called "gas stations in the United States" because this term is more widely used world wide Kneiphof 23:13, 20 May 2006 (UTC)
It has been proposed to move Category:Gas stations in the United States to Category:Petrol stations in the United States Reason: to harmonize the category names of a set of categories. Although the term "Gas station" is more widely used in US, I think the category should be called "Petrol stations in the United States" because this term is more widely used world wide. - Disagree. Not only is "Gas station" the ubiquitous US English term, "Petrol station" is so foreign as to be unfamiliar to most US English speakers (the most likely people to be providing most media in the category). -- Infrogmation (talk) 19:00, 10 May 2015 (UTC)
- I like the neutral term "automobile service stations" as commonly found in metadata (example)... it's a little wordy, but fairly all-embracing, even in the increasing cases where these stations might sell fuel other than gasoline/petrol. I suspect it's hard for native users of local terms like "gas" or "petrol" to fully grasp just how alien they are to the other group. --Junkyardsparkle (talk) 19:10, 25 June 2015 (UTC)
- Hm. Well, in US usage, a "service station" denotes somewhere that not only sells gasoline, but also changes oil and offers at least basic repair service. 50 years ago most "gas stations" were also "service Stations", now the majority are not. Per en:W [:en:w:Service station|Service station], there may be US/UK differences in use of this term as well.
