This is a renaming
[edit]For the record, this category was, in effect, moved from Category:Film industry on 28 February 2014 by User:Marcus Cyron. The history prior to that date can be found under the old name, which had existed since September 2007. Steve Morgan (talk) 06:27, 1 March 2014 (UTC)
- In my opinion, the previous name (Film industry) was clearer to native English speakers, because "Film" is also the common English name for various types of material, some of which have nothing to do with cinema or motion pictures, but the user who moved Film industry to simply "Film" on Commons left no link at all to that other type of film; for now, I have added a note to rectify that omission. As an example, if an English-speaking person were looking for, say, a photo of a Kodachrome film box, he would expect that it would be possible to begin his Commons search here, in the category "Film", because Kodachrome is a type of film. He would be confused, because those types of film are not included in this category, even though the category's title has now been made more broad (by removing "industry"). The English Wikipedia article "Film" has a hatnote at the top for this reason. Commons category names are supposed to use English, and therefore should also be clear/unambiguous to speakers of English. Steve Morgan (talk) 06:59, 1 March 2014 (UTC)
- @Steve Morgan: I was confused by this category tree mostly because I wasn't able to tell the difference between it and Category:Cinema. But I did note that Category:Damaged film was here (and I moved it), so the confusion you mentioned above still exists. I'm not sure what's best here, so I started a discussion: Commons:Categories for discussion/2024/08/Category:Film. Sinigh (talk) 09:41, 9 August 2024 (UTC)
