I do not agree with the proposal for moving this category of Eivissa to Ibiza. Since 1979 the official name is Eivissa substituting the former Ibiza. This name can be checked in the web page of the town council, the web page of the Insular Board and the web page of the Balear Goverment, in Catalan as well as in other languages. Category:Ibiza should be moved to Eivissa.--Vriullop 20:03, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I totally agree with Vriullop. Paucabot 20:23, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Commons uses English official names for categories. In English, the name of this island is Ibiza; that has been discussed and confirmed in the English Wikipedia. So, you can keep Catalan references for the Catalan Wikipedia and Spanish ones for the Spanish Wikipedia. --Juiced lemon 20:59, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry, the correct link to the English version of the City Council web page is one click away: Discover Eivissa. The only official names are in Balearic legislation and there is not any English official name. Neither Ibiza nor Eivissa are English names and they both are used in English depending on the update and the knowledge of the change produced 27 years ago. This can be seen in the own images of this category not uploaded by local islanders: What is Eivissa Old Town or Sunset Eivissa? Commons is not the English Wikipedia, is an international project that uses English as a majority language, but not English point of view of the world.--Vriullop 12:39, 26 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Don't agree: in English the name of the island is not Ibiza. Ibiza is the most known name, because the explosion of turism in spain was during Franco's period, when Catalan was absolutely forbiden. Then most of the people knows it as Ibiza, but this doesen't mean that it is the name of the island in English. Let me give you an example in my language, Catalan. In Catalan, the German city München is called Munic. However, 99% of the people pronounces it as Múnic (changing the entonation). However, in the Catalan Wikipedia we write Munic, not Múnic. So, since English has no official name for Eivissa/Ibiza, I think that the most reasonable thing is to take the official name of the place (and if in the English Wikipedia they don't do it, it doesen't mean that we have to make here the same mistake)--Xtv 00:56, 25 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
During Franco's period Catalan was not forbidden at all, what was repressed was the peripheric nationalisms not the peripheric languages. And Eivissa is not very used anywhere.
By the way, I think that Juiced lemon shouldn't make this kind of changes until there is the formal resolution about the eternal discussion with Martorell.--Xtv 01:01, 25 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ibiza isn't an English exonym, so there's no reason to use this. In spite of this, Common's rules recommends to use endonyms for proper nouns, not English exonyms. --Joanot Martorell 10:08, 25 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Beware! If Frenchs begin messing with Catalan names, maybe we should begin rearranging French names to their original Occitan ones, too! Why not Tolosa instead of Toulouse? Really, that JL is obsessed against Catalonia! --Casaforra (parlem-ne) 18:55, 25 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Non consensus name change

[edit]

In 16th june, 2008, User:Mallorquín changed without any kind of consensus (you can see the discussion above) the name of the category. He defended that the names of the categories should be in English but used ... the spanish name! After that a bot changed the name of the category to Category:Ibiza. Today, I had to revert this changes manually. Paucabot (talk) 09:04, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I live in Eivissa and that's the official name of the island and the most used by its inhabitants so I think that should be Eivissa. In addition, User:Mallorquín only applied his teory that names should be in English in the category:Eivissa, he hasn't applied that in Mallorca that should be Majorca in English. For this reasons I think that Paucabot's changes are OK. ((Sorry for my english)). --ToNToNi (talk) 16:58, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

April, 2009

[edit]

There just have been a new proposal of renaming: Category names should always be in English. This is the Catalan name by Multichill. It would be useful if it was the english name, buit it's not, it's the spanish name, AFAIK. Paucabot (talk) 13:55, 17 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It's the commons name in English, see en:Ibiza. Multichill (talk) 15:23, 17 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I did run in a similar problem with several names in the Basque country. It is handy indeed if you have a formal official name in English, especially in countries like Spain, Switzerland, ... where they have several official names for the same place. In practise, I could not find a formal reference to English names in the Basque country. The wikipedia was not a reference because there, the Basque names changed almost once per month. As I am fed up with moving back and forward from one language/theory to another, I don't move anymore from the native name to another name unless I have a proof in at least one recognised reference work, such as Encarta, Brittanica, .... --Foroa (talk) 16:45, 17 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I checked Encarta and Encyclopedia Brittanica, and Ibiza is indeed the official English name. Moreover, it is the name used in almost all referenced wikipedias, with the exceptions of the Catalan and Basque ones. The move of the category and the associated subcategories will start soon. --Foroa (talk) 14:15, 6 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree. What is the official english name? The only official name is in catalan. Maybe the spanish name is the most widespread name, but it's not the english name, it's the spanish one. Why choosing an spanish name before the official one?
I believe it is exactly the same thing that happened with Peking and Beijing. The most widespread name is the first one, but lately it is more correct to use the second one because of toponym evolution. Toponyms can change from time to time and Eivissa and Beijing are two clear examples. You can check which is the policy in commons: Category:Beijing. Paucabot (talk) 16:00, 14 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Commons:Categories for discussion/2010/03/Category:Eivissa is now closed. We use Ibiza. --MGA73 (talk) 21:22, 9 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
