Category:Zandy's Steak Shop, Allentown, Pennsylvania
Edmund Zandarski moved to Allentown from Mocanagua in Luzerne County about 1936, opening a small grocery store at 751 St John Street (St John & Hall Street). The store had a deli counter at the shop and started serving steak sandwiches and burgers. By 1940, the deli counter had become very profitable and Zandarski switched over to just sandwiches and the business became "Zandie's Luncheonette", although a small grocery section remained. The luncheonette was profitable for many years.
In 1956, Zandarski purchased the former Park Theater to expand his business. When he purchased the property, Zandarski and his brother remodeled the interior and re-opened it as the new 72-seat Zandy's Steak Shop. Zandarski himself moved upstairs into the apartment complex. For over 60 years, the restaurant has been in business at the same location. Zandarski passed in 1982, however the business is now in its third generation of ownership.
Today, inside the steak shop you can still see some remnants of the movie theater.
