English: The woman-at-the-window is an ancient artistic motif, based on the holy symbolism of a nobel woman (or a goddess) looking out. It appears on ivory plaques originating from the Levant, found in Samaria palace and as a loot in Assyrian palaces. The motif is also known fron the cult of Astarte/Aphrodite in Cyprus, sometimes under the name Aphrodite Parakyptousa (Proverbs 7:6 in LXX). It is similar to the biblical descriptions in Judges 5:25, 2 Samuel 6:16 and 2 Kings 9:30. The balustrade of the window is often designed as palmettes symbolizing the tree of life.
