This family business started with William Denny (1779-1833), and became William Denny and Son in 1823. After William Denny died, three of his sons set up Denny Brothers in 1844 and returned to shipbuilding in Dumbarton from 1845. In 1849 one brother was paid out and a new came in. The reorganized firm was named William Denny and Brothers.
