Wally's News was a newspaper and magazine store at 12 South Sixth Street in Allentown. It was owned by Walter J. "Wally" Herman and his wife Mary. Herman got his start at Sweetland's Candy Store at 959 Hamilton Street in 1946 where he worked behind the soda fountain. He and his wife took over an outdoor newsstand on South Sixth Street, which they renamed Wally's on December 26th, 1953.
Wally's was open from 5am till 1am 7 days a week, first selling newspapers outdoors to passing motorists and people walking by the shop, many would come by from the Allentown Bus Terminal across the street. The racks held a full compliment of merchandise as well, from cigarettes to candy to magazines, and up to 38 different newspapers, some in German and French. The merchandise would be taken in each night and brought out again each morning. In the spring of 1959, they moved inside to the store they operated from until 2005.
The Hermans retired after 51 years, and sold the business to Shakeel Qureshi in 2004, who operated it until 2010. It was acquired by City Center Allentown in 2016 and torn down, along with other buildings at the southwest corner of 6th & Hamilton. Today the NIZ Tower 6 stands in its place.
Mary Herman passed in February 2011, Wally in May 2018.
