One of the many 10th to 13th-century temples in the Gadag-Lakkundi region, a major historic city referred in pre-14th century texts as Lokkigundi – the former capital of Hoysalas. Lakkundi was destroyed in the Deccan Sultanate raids and wars that began in the 13th-century. Lakkundi was reduced to a galaxy of abandoned and mutilated ruins, spread over a cluster of small rural villages with a combined population of few thousand residents in the 19th-century. The Virupaksha temple is in the eastern part of a small Lakkundi village-town, about 12 kilometers southeast of Gadag-Betageri twin city.
