This category includes bar charts whose bars have widths that are purposely designed to be variable (non-uniform). Variable-width charts are sometimes called "variwide" charts.

As an example, in vertical charts:

  • Areas of non-uniform-width bars represent quantities with areas A that are respective products of related pairs of vertical-axis quantities (Y = A/X) and horizontal-axis quantities (X).
  • Arithmetically, area A is determined: (A/X) * X = A for each bar

Variable-width bar charts may be vertical or horizontal, stacked or clustered, etc.

Mosaic plots, also known as Marimekko charts or Mekko charts, are examples of variable-width bar charts.

Compare: Variable-radius pie charts
