The monastery is located along the road leading to the west from Kathmandu Metropolitan City Ward No. 27. It is said to have been built about 1500 years ago during the reign of Basantadeva, the grandson of Lichhavi king Mandev. It is also known as Mahabuddha Mahavihar, Mahabuddha Bihar or Mahabuddha Bahal. The historical name of this place is Ukuma Mahavihar.

On the south side of this Bihar, there is the Dharmadhatu Chaitya in an area of about 625 square feet.

To the east of this monastery, there is a large red Shakyamuni Buddha statue, made of the highest quality clay in Nepal. A mandapa has also been set up in front of the temple with a gold-plated vajra. There used to be Buddha Chaitya inside the monastery, mandapa for anointing, Kshatrapat, Vashigal, Agam, Agnishala, reservoir etc. but now it has disappeared, says Sangharatna Shakya, president of Maha Buddha Bihar Shakya Guthi.

There is a chaitya in the central part of Bihar and there are four inscriptions near the wall. There are also idols of various deities. Mahabuddha Bihar Shakya Guthi has also been arranged to manage this Bihar. Accordingly, the system of daily worship, pravajyabhishek, protection of Bihar and worship archana are done here.
