This album is composed of 36 original photographs and real-photo postcards removed from a photo album, documenting a U.S. Marine Corps member named Karlen during his service in World War I. Karlen served in a U.S. Marine Corps detachment aboard U.S. Navy ships based out of U.S. Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia. He was stationed aboard the USS New Hampshire (BB-25) from late 1917 to early 1918. Little is known for sure about him, but it thought that Karlen also served on other ships and duties during WWI. Karlen served on the New Hampshire around the same time as Elgie D. Black of Charlotte, N.C., who also served in the U.S. Marine Corps. The photographs show the ship while it was participating in a Navy cruise believed to have been around South America.
Not all of the photographs can be confirmed as depicting the New Hampshire, though most are and have indicators like the letters “N.H.” on the side of the ship’s lifeboat to confirm the ship’s identity.
