The tarator in Turkey is a creamy dish eaten as "meze" or used as a sauce for several seafood dishes, like the "midye tava" and "kalamar tava". Traditionally it is made with bread, walnuts, olive oil, garlic, lemon juice and salt. (Sometimes people confuse the tarator with "tartar sauce", the confusion ending in a mixture of tarator and the French sauce, with the addition of mayo to the original tarator receipt. In several extreme cases people use yoghurt to replace the wrongly-added mayo.)
