English: This street is named after a date which commemorates the culmination of a revolution organized by the nobility and bourgeoisie, executed on 1 December 1640. This was during the 'Portuguese Restoration War' which was the name given by nineteenth-century 'romantic' historians to the war between Portugal and Spain that began with the Portuguese revolution of 1640 and ended with the Treaty of Lisbon (1668).
