instrument for which music is conventionally written transposed to a different pitch Sheet music of an orchestral piece. Most instruments' parts have a key signature indicating the actual key of D major, but some parts are written transposed and accordingly bear other key signatures: clarinets ("2 Klarinetten in A"), trumpets ("2 Trompeten in C"), and French horns ("4 Hörner in F"). Note that timpani ("3 Pauken in A C D") are traditionally written without key signature but are notated at concert pitch. | |||||
