Although highly codified, the Nritta dances do not have a religious vocation. They are used to mimic or accompany the stories of the Mahabharata and Ramayana. In Gujarat-Rajastha they are represented by nomad troupes of the castes Bhil or Bhopas. More modestly they also accompany private events such as weddings.
