English: This street known as the Gangway was laid out in 1902 and was constructed for the use of the mules which used to haul wagons of coal up from the beach into the town and coal merchants yard which stood where the buildings known as Merchants Court now stand. In later years it was used by the horses to haul the bathing huts up from the beach during high tides and stormy weather. The gradient is constructed with granite stones with there top edge slightly higher than the cobbles to help the horses hooves get up the slope. The old lifeboat house is a the bottom end of the Gangway and nowadays is used by the inshore lifeboat.
