English: The site was probably founded by a grant of St. Alloch's Church at Kilcloggan and its lands by Henry II to the Knights Templars in 1172 who chose Templetown as headquarter. When the Templars were suppressed in 1312, the site came into posession of the Knights Hospitallers who surrendered it in 1540/41 when the monastic houses where dissolved. The ruins of the medieval church survived until the 19th century. A new church for the Church of Ireland was built north of the tower in 1827/28 and the medieval tower converted into a belfry. No visible traces survive of the medieval church and the 19th-century church is in ruins.
