The Technics RS-B605 was an middle-of-the-line (actually, the fourth from the bottom after models 205, 305 and 405) cassette deck sold in 1988-1989 [1]. Despite its positioning in the Technics catalogue, it was actually an entry-level two-head deck with mediocre (at best!) sound. Very much like the entry-level reel-to-reel decks, the 605 uses a "dual-purpose" record-and-playback amp built around a custom Panasonic IC (AN7016) - this, probably, explains the poor sound compared to the Technics decks of the early 1980s. The 605 belonged to the last generation of decks with dbx noise reduction. Panasonic/Technics was the main sponsor of the consumer dbx, but even they realized that by the end of the 1980s the dbx was done. By 1989 the European catalog had only one dbx deck (the 755), and by 1990 the dbx was officially retired.
