The Tasua is a historical gold weight of the Akan in Ghana and the Ivory Coast for the weighing of gold dust.
Regional name variants:
- Pereguan osua
- Ta atape
- Ta atatue
- Ta atakpi
- Benna anrui nyo
The name "Tasua" (= 1 Ta + 1 Sua) is misleading, because it would indicate to a weight around of 70,xx g.
The name "Pereguan osua" would be more to the point because "1 Peregua + 1 Sua = 70,4 g + 17,6 g = 88.0 g".
The prefixes "o-" or "e-" mean singular; "a-" or "n-" mean plural.
Theoretical weight:
- - 87,76 g (Abel for 400 Taku)
- - 87,78 g (Abel for 600 Ba)
- - 88,0 (Garrard)
Real weight:
- - 87,5 g (Inventory number MHNT.ETH.2010.25.094 in the "Muséum de Toulouse") (Brass figure two crossed crocodiles with a fish in their mouth.)
Value equivalents:
- 1 Ta atakpi = 400 Taku = 600 Ba (Abel)
- 88,0 g mean ca. 45 Ackies
- 240 Taku = 40 Ackies (Abel)
- (1 Ounce = 16 Ackies (European trade))
