Also known as Vav, Vaav or Baodi, stepwells refer to historic public water infrastructure created to access ground water. They were particularly important in arid regions of Gujarat, Rajasthan, central India and the Deccan terrain of India. The stepwells in India sometimes included elaborate artwork, sculpture provided, mandapa to rest, and included stairs to reach the water pool underground. They were sponsored by queens, kings, monasteries and wealthy patrons. Some stepwells have inscriptions that have been helpful in dating historical events. The oldest stepwells in Gujarat date from the 1st millennium.
