An early term for steam-powered cranes for logging purposes to pull logs to a collection point using steel cables. They were often equipped with bogie trucks as a rail vehicle or extendable legs for raising off a flat-bed rail car and positioning above the railway. For even greater mobility, steam skidders were sometimes also sled-mounted or on steel wheels for conveyance over land, not to be confused with steam donkeys or donkey engines which used spar trees for high-lead logging. Later, particularly with adoption of the internal combustion engine, these forestry machines generally became known simply as "yarders" or "cable yarders".
