Rhodesia existed in the period 1965-1979 as no complete recognised state in southern Africa. During his time, Rhodesia was bordered by the Republic of South Africa to the south, Bechuanaland (later Botswana) to the southwest, the contemporary Zambia to the northwest, and Mozambique (a Portuguese province until 1975) to the east. The state was named after Cecil Rhodes, whose British South Africa Company acquired the land in the late 19th century.
The state territory of Rhodesia was part of the:
- Predecessor state: British South Africa Company (BSAC), as administrator for the territory stretching from the Limpopo to Lake Tanganyika under charter as a protectorate (1889-1953)
- Predecessor state: Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland (1953-1963). also known as the Central African Federation (CAF) (semi-independent federation (of the British protectorates) of Northern Rhodesia and Nyasaland)
- Predecessor/Neighbour state: Southern Rhodesia (1923-1979) (self-governing British crown colony)
Successor state: Zimbabwe (since 1980)
