English: Leighlin was founded as a monastic site c. 600 by St. Gobban who moved on and left the monastery under the direction of St. Lazerian. Leighlin was named as one of five bishoprics of Leinster at the synod of Rathbreasail in 1111. The nave and choir are from the 13th century, two transepts, a tower, and a chapel attached to the choir were added in the 16th century. The south transept was later demolished, the north transept roofless. General restorations occured in the 19th centurySee Gwynn and Hadcock, Medieval Religious Houses Ireland, p. 89, Anna Brindley and Annaba Kilfeather, Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow, p. 69.
