Sri Mariamman Temple at 244 South Bridge Road, Singapore 058793, traces its history back to a temple made of wood and attap (thatch made from fronds of the nipa palm, Nypa fruticans) in 1827. This was replaced by a brick-and-plaster building in 1843. The temple was gazetted as a national monument on 28 June 1973.
