Smallwood's Retreat was built for William Smallwood in 1760 near Marbury, Maryland. The original name may have been Mattawoman Plantation. The main crop was tobacco. Smallwood owned 56 slaves and indentured servants, and 5,000 acres of land. The house is now part of Smallwood State Park.[1]
