English: The Church of Scientology of New York Celebrity Centre at 227 West 46th Street between Broadway and 8th Avenue in the Theatre District of Manhattan, New York City, is a 7-story Neo-Classical building which was designed by Harde & Short and built in 1912 as a clubhouse for the White Rats of America, a labor union for male vaudeville performers. The building's facade was redesigned by Thomas W. Lamb in 1917. The White Rats disbanded in 1920, and the building became the National Vaudeville Artists Club, where young actors, like Cary Grant, lived while trying to break into show business. Later, in the 1970s, it was the headquarters of the Church of Seventh-day Adventists, who sold it to the Church of Scientology in 1980. The building was renovated, and the Celebrity Centre was opened on September 25, 2004. (Sources: From Abyssinian to Zion; and NY Songlines])
