Through the Apostolic Constitutions (Book VIII, ch. 42), the Church of Christ has received the custom to make commemorations for the departed on the third, ninth, and fortieth days after their repose.1 Likewise, Soul Saturdays (PsychoSabbaton) have been set aside as a common memorial to be made for all pious Orthodox Christians who have reposed from all ages past. There are several Soul Saturdays throughout the year; however all Orthodox observe the following Soul Saturdays:
- The Saturday before Meat-fare (Judgment) Sunday.
- The Saturday before Cheese-fare (Forgiveness) Sunday.
- The Saturday before the Sunday of Orthodoxy (1st Saturday of Lent).
- The Saturday before Pentecost.
