Sandboxes hold sand that may be released under the wheels of a steam locomotive, so as to improve grip in slippery conditions. Originally gravity fed, they later used steam to blast a jet of sand directly underneath the wheel, thus avoiding it being blown off in a crosswind.
Brake vans may also have sandboxes, to assist with grip for braking.
