Samuel A'Court Ashe matriculated at the USNA, 1855-1861, but resigned to take up the study of law. It was interrupted by the Civil War. Ashe joined the Confederate Army as an engineering officer in 1861. The Confederacy defeated, Ash's family plantation was confiscated, leaving them in penury. Finding employment as a conductor, Ashe was empowered to resume the study of law, passing the bar in North Carolina in 1866. As an ex-officer he participated in what has been called ex-Confederate partisan activities. Graduating from that, he ran for office in North Carolina and had a successful career during which he participated in the reconstruction of the south.
