Story from "Ty Cobb,My Life In Baseball"(1961),with Al Stump.
According to Cobb,it was Hall of Famer Eddie Collins,2nd baseman for Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics; who sensed something was up with Ford's sudden success.
He noticed Ford carefully guarded his glove and wouldn't let anybody near it. So one day he blocked Ford's path as he walked off the mound."Let's have a look at that glove"
"Go take a flying dive off the Flatiron Building",said Ford.(or words to that effect)
But Collins eventually brought umpire attention to the "emery ball".
