  • 1931 Chartered by Navigazione Generale Italiana (N.G.I) of Genoa, for their Australian service.
  • 01.01.1932 Transferred to “Italia” (Flotte Riunite Cosulich-Lloyd Sabaudo-Nav. Gen. Trieste/Genoa.) Used in the service from Genova via Naples, Messina, Port Said to Aden, Colombo, Fremantle, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, together with her sistership ESQUILINO.
  • 01.01.1937 Transferred to Lloyd Triestino Soc. Anon. Di Nav., Genova., but kept in the service between Genoa and Australia.
  • 05.06.1940 Steamed off down the Brisbane river, abandoning all scheduled ports, to sail directly north, tried to reach Japan before the war started. At full speed, she passed through Torres Strait. One week later she had entered the Arafura Sea, when war was declared.
  • 12.06.1940 HMS MANOORA, an armed merchant cruiser, under Royal Australian Navy command, located the ship near Solomon Islands, intercepted her and ordered her to surrender. The ship was put on fire and scuttled by her own crew, in a position 02 20S 163 45E, to avoid capture. Once 'Manoora' had picked up the crew, they sank the burning 'Romolo', with a burst from their guns.
