English: In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Railroad Avenue followed a combination of trestle bridges and planks over pilings from Smith Cove in Seattle south along the Central Waterfront, further south over what were then tideflats in today's Sodo, then (before the construction of Harbor Island), across Elliott Bay to what were then wheat elevators and warehouses in West Seattle, near site of present-day restaurant "Salty's on Alki Beach" (which, depite its name is over a mile from Alki Beach, with Duwamish Head in between). Portions of Railroad Avenue, especially along the Central Waterfront, were at times navigable by vehicles other than just rail vehicles. The trestle that crossed Elliott Bay was torn down as part of the construction of Harbor Island. The mudflats were filled to form today's Sodo and Industrial District, and a seawall in the mid-1930s changed the landscape of the Central Waterfront, and that portion became present-day Alaskan Way. From Belltown to Smith Cove, more fill brought the railway onto land.
