L'histoire d' Ambierle se confond avec celle d'une abbaye bénédictine fondée au Haut Moyen Âge. Rattachée à l' ordre de Cluny au X° siècle, cet établissement monastique a été réduit en prieuré en 1101. La chapelle priorale subsistante a été reconstruite durant la seconde moitié du XV° siècle en intégrant les restes d'un édifice roman du XI° siècle.
