The Prasanna Somesvara temple near Udupi in Udayapura (Udyavara) village of coastal Karnataka is one of earliest known apsidal Hindu temple along the southwestern coast of India (Tulu Nadu Karnataka and Kerala). It is dedicated to Shiva and is dated about 725 CE based on several Alupa records, two pilgrim inscriptions on a bare rock near the temple, and the inscription of Aluvarasa II (first half of 8th century). The site is definitely an older Hindu tirtha site based on these epigraphical records as they do not announce a new temple, but instead celebrate and offer gifts to the pre-existing temple.
The Prasanna Somesvara temple is next to the Shambhu Shaileshwara Shiva Temple and a part of Hindu temples complex. The pioneering temple design ideas of this temple likely inspired the apsidal plan Hindu temples for Shiva, Vishnu and Devi traditions in many parts of Kerala that were built in the 9th to 12th centuries.
