The holiday commemorates the arrival of Mormon pioneers in Salt Lake Valley on July 24, 1847. Although Utah didn't join the United States as a territory until 1850, and didn't achieve statehood until 1896, Pioneer Day is nonetheless celebrated as a statehood celebration.
