English: A pillar is a vertical support structure in architecture. Pillars are similar to columns, providing support as vertical compression members, but a pilar can be made of any material and a pillar's base section can be all shapes — except circular.
Deutsch: Pillar könnte man mit Pfeiler übersetzten, genauso wie auch pier (→category: pier (architecture)). Mit letzterem sind eher „Brückenpfeiler“, „Wandpfeiler“ oder „Bogenpfeiler“ gemeint.
Pillars nennt man vorrangig das, wozu man allgemein auch Säulen (→category: columns) sagt, nur mit dem Unterschied, dass pillars meist keinen runden Querschnitt haben. Aber auch im Englischen wird das kaum unterschieden, so dass man dort in der Wikipedia pillar auf coloumn weiterleitet und in einem gemeinsamen Artikel behandelt.
