Pentarchy was a model of Church organisation formulated in the laws of Emperor Justinian I of the Roman Empire. By the 5th century, five patriarchates had been confirmed by the fourth Ecumenical Council - the Council of Chalcedon. The Catholic Church partially recognises the Pentarchy as an equal Pentarchy with an order of precedence starting with Rome (immediately followed by Constantinople). Oriental Orthodoxy still holds to the theory of the three Petrine sees. The Assyrian Church of the East does not recognize the pentarchy. While Eastern Orthodox churches partially recognise the Pentarchy, they are opposed to the doctrine of papal supremacy.

Today, due to internecine struggles in the Christian Church, there are many claimants to the same patriarchal titles.
