English: Paintings of St. Luke Painting the Virgin depict the Christian belief that Saint Luke was the first one to create an image of the Madonna and Child. These paintings were often commissioned as altarpieces for St. Luke chapels in European churches prior to the Protestant Reformation. The painter was often the head of the largest local painter's workshop, and such workshops loosely organized themselves into Guilds of St. Luke towards the end of the 16th century. After the reformation, in Protestant cities, such guilds became secular and were often reorganized to accomodate the lack of church and altar-specific responsibilities.
Nederlands: St. Lucas schildert de madonna, ook bekend als Lukas-madonna, is de onderwerp van een neo-gotische altarstuk in de Grote Kerk van vele europese steden.
