The school, chartered by New York State in 1817 and opened in 1818 in a municipal building in Manhattan's City Hall Park, later moved to its own building, on the southwest corner of 50th Street and Fourth (today called Park) Avenue in Manhattan. In 1856 it moved to an estate in Washington Heights, Manhattan.
Today the school is located in White Plains, N. Y., and is called the New York School for the Deaf.
